Everything you might want to know before your first lesson
Do I need to be at a certain level to start?
Not at all. I teach complete beginners as happily as I teach A-Level students. We simply start where you are. If you have never spoken a word of French, we begin at bonjour and build from there.
Which video platform do you use?
Lessons run on a standard video call, usually Zoom or Google Meet, whichever suits you. You do not need any special software, just a quiet space, a device with a camera and a reasonable internet connection.
How long is a lesson, and how much does it cost?
Each lesson is 45 minutes. A single lesson is €30 (£25 GBP, $35 USD, $45 CAD or $45 AUD). A five-lesson pack is €130, which works out at €26 per lesson and saves you €20. See the pricing page for full details.
Why are prices shown in euros?
I am based in France, so I set my prices in euros, which suits most learners living here. Clear equivalents in pounds, US, Canadian and Australian dollars are shown alongside, so you always know exactly what a lesson costs in your own currency.
How do I pay?
We sort out payment by email once we have agreed your first lesson or pack. There is no subscription, no platform fee and no lock-in.
What ages do you teach?
I work with secondary and sixth-form students through to adults of every age, including retirees settling into life in France. For younger children, families and couples, see the families and couples page.
Can my partner or family join the lessons?
Yes. I teach couples and families together as well as individuals. Tell me who would like to take part and I will suggest the best way to arrange and price it. More on the families and couples page.
Do you teach GCSE and A-Level French?
Yes. I offer exam-focused tuition for GCSE and A-Level students, with real attention to the speaking exam, writing, translation and grammar. More on the GCSE and A-Level page.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Just let me know in good time and we will move the lesson. I ask for reasonable notice so the slot can be offered to someone else if needed.
Do you set homework?
Only if you want it. Light, useful practice between lessons helps progress a great deal, but it is always optional and never busywork.
I am not sure what my level is. Can you tell me?
Yes. In a relaxed first lesson I can usually place you across speaking, listening, reading and writing within the first twenty minutes, and explain what would take you to the next level. The CEFR guide is a good place to start in the meantime.
