What we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with and how to make us stop. Written to be read rather than skimmed past.
The short version. We collect your name, email, country and a few details about what you want to learn, plus a phone number if you choose to give one. We use them to reply to you, arrange lessons and, only if you ask, send occasional news. If you give a phone number, Nathalie may call you about your enquiry. We use analytics and advertising cookies only if you accept them. We never sell your data.
French Ici Tutoring is run by Nathalie, a French teacher based in France. She is the data controller for your information under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the French Data Protection Act (loi Informatique et Libertés).

When you email us: whatever you choose to include, usually your name, email address, your country, your level, what you want help with, your availability and your time zone. This website has no contact form, account system or shop.
Your phone number: optional. The pre-filled enquiry email has a line for it, and you can leave it blank or delete it. If you include a number, see phone calls below.
When you become a learner: lesson notes, progress records, invoices and payment records, and for anyone under 18, a parent or carer's contact details.
Lesson recordings: lessons are only recorded with your agreement. This is covered in full in our safeguarding policy.
When you browse: our web host keeps standard technical logs, such as your IP address, browser and the pages requested, to keep the site secure and working.
We do not collect card or bank details through this website. Payments are made by bank transfer, so we only see the sender's name and payment reference.
We do not use automated decision making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects.
This site uses Google Analytics (GA4) to understand, in aggregate, how many people visit and which pages are useful. It also uses Microsoft Clarity, which shows us how pages are used in practice, such as where visitors click, scroll and pause, so we can fix the parts that confuse people. In line with the guidance of the CNIL (the French data protection authority), both are switched off by default. Nothing loads and nothing is tracked unless you accept cookies in the cookie banner, and declining is as easy as accepting. Accepting also allows advertising cookies, as explained below.
When analytics is on, Google sets cookies to recognise returning visits for up to 13 months. Google Analytics data is looked at in aggregate. It is used for advertising only as described below. Clarity sets cookies of its own (mainly _clck and _clsk), none lasting longer than 13 months, and produces session recordings and heatmaps that are not tied to your name or email address. We do not link them to your enquiry. Your choice is saved in your browser so the banner does not keep reappearing, and you can change it at any time below.

Under French law (Code des postes et des communications électroniques, article L34-5), we only send marketing emails to people who have actively asked to receive them.
Existing learners may occasionally receive news about similar lessons, but only where they were told about this when they gave us their email address and did not object.
Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link that works immediately. Unsubscribing does not stop the emails you actually need, such as lesson confirmations, invoices and homework.
You do not have to give us a phone number. The pre-filled enquiry email has a line for one, but it is optional, and you can enquire, book and have lessons without it.
If you include a phone number, you are agreeing that Nathalie of French Ici Tutoring may call you about your enquiry, including to talk through your goals and to suggest and arrange a first lesson. Adding the number is how you give that agreement, and we keep your email as our record of it. The agreement lasts for one year from your enquiry, or until you withdraw it if that comes sooner.
We will use your number only for those calls and for calls about lessons you have booked. We will not phone you about anything else, or send you marketing by text or messaging app, unless you have separately asked us to.
You can withdraw your agreement at any time, as easily as you gave it. Email bonjour@french-ici-tutoring.com or tell us on a call, and the calls stop. Withdrawing does not stop the emails you need, such as lesson confirmations and invoices.
We reserve the right to use advertising tools at any time, such as Google Ads, Microsoft Ads and Meta (Facebook and Instagram). These are only ever used for visitors who have accepted cookies in the cookie banner. If you have accepted, we may use information about your visit to measure which adverts lead to enquiries and to show you our adverts on other sites and apps.
If you have also opted in to marketing emails, we may upload your email address to these platforms so we can show you relevant adverts, or avoid showing you adverts for something you already have. Email addresses are scrambled (hashed) before upload rather than sent in readable form. We may also ask the platforms to find people with similar interests to our learners. Your details are never shared with those people.
If you decline cookies, none of this applies to you. If you withdraw consent or unsubscribe later, we stop using your data for advertising and remove you from any audience at the next update, which can take up to 30 days because the platforms refresh on their own schedule.
We use a small number of companies to run the business. Each only gets what it needs:
Some of these are based outside the European Union, mostly in the United States. Where that happens, transfers are covered by an adequacy decision, such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, or by EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
We will also disclose information where the law requires it, or where a child may be at risk of harm, as set out in our safeguarding policy.
We do not sell your data to anyone, ever.
We aim to remove personal data within three years of our last contact with you. We are a small business and do not run an automated deletion schedule, so some information may be kept for longer than that.
Some records have to be kept for longer by law. Invoices and accounting records are kept for ten years, as French law requires (Code de commerce, article L123-22), and safeguarding records for as long as the law and relevant guidance require. Lesson recordings are deleted once your lessons end, or sooner if you ask.
If you would like your data removed, email bonjour@french-ici-tutoring.com and we will delete whatever we are not legally required to keep.

Email bonjour@french-ici-tutoring.com and we will respond within one month. There is no charge. A parent or carer can exercise these rights on behalf of a child.
In France, a young person can consent to the use of their personal data online from the age of 15. Below that age, a parent's consent is also required (loi Informatique et Libertés, article 45). We go further than this: lessons for anyone under 18 are always arranged through a parent or carer, and it is their contact details we hold and correspond with.
We do not ask for proof of age. If we are made aware that we hold data about someone under 18, we can delete it, or move the arrangement to a parent or carer and remove the learner's details from any marketing or advertising use. Where it is not clear that someone is under 18, this is much harder for us to spot, so please tell us.
We do not knowingly use children's data for marketing or advertising. If you believe we hold data about a child and would like it removed, email bonjour@french-ici-tutoring.com and we will deal with it promptly.
Please come to us first. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the CNIL (Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés) at cnil.fr, by post at 3 Place de Fontenoy, TSA 80715, 75334 Paris Cedex 07, or on +33 1 53 73 22 22. If you live elsewhere in the EU, you can also contact the data protection authority where you live.
